The New York Undercover theme song is still top five, all time. A couple of things I just learned/re-remembered:
1) It’s a Dick Wolf show that exists in the same television universe as Law & Order and Homicide: Life on the Street.
2) Mtume (of “Juicy Fruit” fame) never got the theme song approved by Dick Wolf. Dick wanted to use his normal composers, but Mtume wanted a Black sound for this cop show on Fox (which aired after Living Single). Dick’s boss loved the song, so that’s how we got this bop.
3) Mtume scored the whole show and re-arranged all of the songs the musical guests performed at the fictional club Natalie’s.
Get into this bop again real quick.
(Also, get into the fact that a cop show set in Giuliani’s NYC was a hit with Black people in the late 90s!)
