Back in June, Dr. Fauci said, “We are now having 40-plus thousand new cases a day. I would not be surprised if we go up to 100K a day if this does not turn around so I’m very concerned.”
Live footage of Dr. Fauci seeing his prediction come true:
If I was a poet, I could probably pull some kind of flowery symbolism about the US having a contested election and the next day recording 100,000 new cases of a virus we could stop if we wanted to, but I’m not a poet. I’m just a regular person watching the country crumble under the weight of its own greed and hubris.
The United States recorded more than 100,000 new coronavirus infections in a single day for the first time on Wednesday as the nation waited to learn the results of a presidential election carried out in the shadow of a pandemic.
…
Despite the pandemic’s omnipresent specter, exit polls showed that voters were more concerned about the state of the economy than public health, according to data collected by Edison Research and reviewed by The Post.
About 4 in 10 voters said they would prioritize the economy over efforts to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

I wish there was a way to get the average American to understand that the economy is not sluggish because of Democrats trying to impose strict public health regulations that are hurting businesses. The economy would recover if people felt safe leaving their homes, and half the country — the half that believes in science — does not. If the public doesn’t trust in the government, the public isn’t going to the movies and out to eat. The pandemic has shown us that our economy is more dependent upon front-facing customer services industries than we previously realized. Those industries can’t function if half the customers are staying home because the government didn’t do its job to keep them safe from a deadly virus.
So we had voters going to the polls worried about “the economy” when every roadblock working against the economy was put there by the Trump Administration and the Republican Party.
–A poor response to the pandemic has half the country wary of interacting with customer service workers and fellow patrons.
–A top-down approach to economic recovery where the airline industry is bailed out and the 1% get tax breaks hasn’t trickled down to the rest of us.
–A singular $1200 stimulus check and no further relief in sight has forced people to clutch their purses even more — if you have no money, you’re not going to spend it at Wal-Mart, and consumer spending drives the economy.
A pandemic plan is the only way to put the economy back on course. There is no economic recovery until Americans are confident they can go out to eat and not come home with COVID-19. With 100,000 new cases in a day, there’s really no functioning economy in the near future.
