This was very much a good use of my little $0.69 cents or however much it cost me to buy that single online and promptly lose wherever the file went.

Megan Thee Stallion’s “Hiss” lunges onto the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart at No. 1. The rapper notches her third leader with the debut of the diss track, following two in 2020: “Savage,” with Beyoncé, for a week that May, and Cardi B’s “WAP,” on which Megan Thee Stallion is featured, for four weeks beginning that August.

I’m not invested in any “beef” between Nicki Minaj and Megan Thee Stallion. While I do enjoy a rap battle, it’s only fun when both of the players are on the same page with one another.
Megan is spitting bars about all of her haters.
Nicole is rambling in a whisper as an exercise in the world’s longest holler from a hit dog. We must continue to note that no other person in hip-hop linked to sexual misconduct felt the need to go on a 3-day rant after Madame Pete included “Megan’s Law” in her new number one single.
The charts are so easily manipulated these days in the age of social media that a #1 single doesn’t hit the same way it did when I was buying music on New Release Tuesdays back in middle school. Still, seeing “Hiss” at #1 is a different kind of validation for Megan. It’s a confirmation that not only does her fanbase — the Hotties — stand behind her, but the general population is also Team Megan coming out of years of public turmoil. Megan has come through a bad record deal, the death of her mother, being shot in the foot, online misogynoir, and bullying at the hands of music’s most wrathful fanbase at the direction of their Dear Leader Nicole Jong Un, and the public is behind her.
Even more than chart success, that co-sign from the public equates to staying power and commercial wins to come. The album will move copies. The tour will sell out. More awards will come. Megan took a page out of the Beyonce School of Silence, dropped a track, and refused to get down in the mud with her opposition. In doing so, she turned some unintiated into new fans, and some old fans into bonafide Hotties.
