Opinion: Bike lanes a waste of money if they go unused
A section-front article on bike lines with a few hundred cyclists? Will this large crowd be using these lanes daily or just for the photo op? Will they patronize the businesses they are ruining with the loss of 450 parking spaces?
(cont.)
Opinion: Sidewalks are a waste of money if they go unused. If they are empty at any point, then they simply should not exist and we should just make people walk in the street with the cars since the road is already there and obviously far more important.
Look how dumb that sounds.
Also important to note: You never really know how much a particular bike lane will be used until you have other bike lanes that connect to it. A bike lane from Point A to Point B will only be used by the few people who need to go from A to B. If I’m at Point C and there’s no connection to either, I’m not going to bike that lane. I’m not going to carry my bike in a car or on transit over there just to bike that lane. Bike lane usage increases as the network grows and becomes more accessible from a variety of origins.
But the most important *fact* about bike lanes is that bikes are cleaner, quieter, and more efficient. Four bikers take up less space than four people in a car, and that’s before noting that most cars have just ONE person in them anyway. Car travel is SO MUCH wasted space, but the complaint is over *bike lanes* being a waste of money? Please.
This has quietly become an official Anti-Car account.
