A lot of gay bars in NYC do this thing called “musical Mondays” where home of sectionals go hang out and listen to their friends utilizing their theater degrees by singing showtunes with varying degrees of ability. Before OverpricedVodka there was So Let’s Talk About, but before that, it was just a tumblr posting music all the time so I might bring that back.
Here go some tunes to start your week.
Blondie “X Offender”
Two albums before Blondie hit it big with “Heart of Glass,” they debuted with this New Wave ditty that everybody has forgotten about.
Sabrina Carpenter “Taste”
Death Becomes Her is one of my favorite movies all time so it’s pretty easy to disappoint me with a watered down homage. Not so for Sabrina! She poured some extra gas on it and well full macabre. We stan a bit.
Faith Evans “Soon As I Get Home”
Mary J. Blige’s backup singer…Biggie’s wife…
Faith was able to make a name for herself when this dropped and it’s been on constant rotation for Adult R&B stations since.
Lesley Gore “You Don’t Own Me”
It’s easy to remember Lesley Gore for “It’s My Party (And I’ll Cry if I Want To)” but really you should remember her for this passionate, brassy delivery coming out of a teenager.
And speaking of coming out, remember her as a queer icon too.
Sugar Ray “When It’s Over”
I don’t know if frosted tips really qualifies as a bodacious blonde, but Mark McGrath’s image was so intrinsically linked to those fake blonde highlights, it only felt right to drop a Sugar Ray on here.
Erika Jayne “Dominos”
Funny thing about Erika Jayne: she was already a Billboard mainstay before Housewives, tied with Beyonce in the third place spot for the longest streak of #1s on the Dance Club chart. Her career was funded by money her husband stole from his clients (and, likely, money that was used to bribe DJs to play her songs and get those #1s) but now she’s out on her own.
Luckily, I don’t like any of her older songs but she has put out two bangers with her new shoestring budget so I can listen without as much guilt.
Sophie B. Hawkins “As I Lay Me Down”
Another queer icon.
And VH1 icon.
Madonna “Express Yourself”
Madonna was so blonde in this video, but this era started a deep, chocolate brown for the “Like A Prayer” video. After the controversy (and Pepsi dropping out as the tour sponsor), she went bright blonde, launched the Blonde Ambition Tour, and gave us “Vogue.” An iconic blonde era.
Adela “Homewrecked”
I’m patiently waiting on this music video to drop, because Adela is a dancer y’all. I just need somebody to give Tate McRae a run for her money….somebody with better music. Adela’s first single is giving me hope.
The Chicks “I Can Love You Better”
Natalie Maines hopped into the group after two albums with a blonde bob, a big voice, and a whole lot of sass. It made their major label debut pop and country’s greatest girl group was off to the races.
Paloma Faith “How You Leave A Man”
I need to actually get a man before Paloma can teach me how to leave one, but nevertheless, I do love a good holler.
Bon Jovi “It’s My Life”
Jon Bon Jovi cut his locks and debuted a sensible Mom Cut in the mid-90s, but it was still blonde.
Mary J. Blige feat. Remy Ma & DJ Khaled “Gone Forever”
The queen of Natural Blondes herself, Mary J. Blige dropped a grown and sensible bop earlier this year that you might have missed.
