I didn’t watch the debate, so this is not an analysis that some of you may have been used to on SoLetsTalkAbout. I’m not even sober right now to be honest. I was out with a boy drinking in Hell’s Kitchen because it is Pride Weekend in NYC, and I would rather make out (with a man) than stroke out (from watching two senile old men grunt incoherently at each other on the news).
I was reading some of the tweets on my way home and there seems to be this tidal wave of “oh no, Biden did terrible! What ever will we do!” and I have a few questions.
Did you think he would do well?
Has anybody learned how to debate against a misinformation machine like Trump?
Does it even matter at this point???????? [I put lots of questions marks here to indicate drunk yelling.]
Look. Biden has been sundowning since 2019. The man has been showing signs of dementia since before eggs were a million dollars a dozen. Because of the deplorable state of American politics, we have a system where Democrats — the Big Tent that we are — feel there is no candidate that can consolidate the entire base to, first, vote Trump out of office and, currently, keep him out of office. There is really no central position in the Democratic party that could unite us in policy or belief. There are Black trans women trying to stay alive at one end and rich old white people trying to hold on to their money with juuuuussst enough morals to say “my kids say bigotry is kind of bad” on the other. These various groups under the Big Tent have nothing to unite them behind any candidate. So, the powers that be have no choice but to put forth an Establishment Candidate to appease the wealthy traditionalists, and then drive home a message of “I’m the only one who can defeat The Great Republican Evil” to frighten everyone else to consolidate behind them.
This is how you end up with a candidate who has one foot in the grave and the other foot wandering around trying to find a Dairy Queen. But guess what else you get with an Establishment Candidate: establishment people who know how to run a fucking government.
I’m not trying to debate policy with anyone anymore because the vast majority of people do not have the range to synthesize all of the information necessary to build an educated point of view that encompasses current politics, historical conflict, reality, and social constructs. So whatever One Issue you are voting on that you feel the Biden Administration failed at (that somehow the Trump Administration will do better at?!) is really not a conversation I’m trying to have. I’m just here to complain for a second while I let my hangover-prevention shake do its thing before I go to bed, and highlight one simple fact: you have two options. One of them is probably near death, but has a very solid foundation of established, educated, smart politicians to advise (and prop-up) a President who has already bought his ticket to the Upper Room. The other is a liar, a racist, a misogynist, and a felon who has surrounded himself with crooks, criminals, idiots, and bigots whose goal is to turn the country into a Christofascist dictatorship where women have no voice and poor people have no rights.
If you saw Biden’s performance and decided to harp on how terrible he sounds, please go jump headfirst into the congestion on Tenth Avenue that Kathy Hochul refuses to tax. I literally do not care how Biden sounds. He could die next month and I would still vote for him in November because I have seen the people around Uncle Joe and I have seen the people around Kim Jung Orange. Voting for President is not voting for a singular person as the end all be all of American Politics. You’re voting for an entire administration, a full team of people who keep the various gears of government running. I trust one of those teams to run the country and keep it in tact until the Democrats can produce a candidate who isn’t sponsored by Geritol.
