I need to find my people! Where are my people who do not “get” Tim Robinson? I feel like the entire internet is conspiring to gaslight me right now because people love Tim Robinson. My theater was full of people laughing at random intervals which I assume were parts of the script meant to be perceived as “jokes.” Friendship has GLOWING reviews calling it hilarious and one of the funniest movies in ages.
I laughed exactly one time, when he filled his coffee mug too much. This was near the beginning of the film when I was still in a good mood and somewhat prone to a giggle because I was in the state of mind that “you are watching a comedy, get ready to laugh.”
By the end of the film, it was just a backdrop to my snacks. I kept eating to make the experience of sitting there worthwhile. I was doubting my own cognitive abilities after being surrounded by (heterosexual white) people who had been laughing for an hour and a half while I just ate my next handful of empty calories.
From what I’ve read about this movie since seeing it, I think if you like Tim Robinson you will also like the movie. Something about “cringe” humor? So by all means, if you are part of that tribe, then a movie ticket seems like money well spent.
But if you, like I, do not “get” Tim Robinson, go see literally any other movie. Any. Other. Movie.
The only reason it has half a star is because it did spark a mini conversation afterward about people who are genuinely unlikable and what a lonely existence that must be. It made me feel bad for a moment, until I realized, most unlikable people are just stubborn narcissists who refuse to see validity in the responses of others.
So. A half a star for that 45 second conversation we had afterward.
