Listen. I know movies are subjective but I’ll be the first to say my taste in “monster movies” is questionable at best. My absolute favorite monster movie of all time is Rampage which I have seen no less than 20 times and will watch anytime it’s on television. So take everything I have to say about Jurassic Park with a grain of salt because here’s my ranking of the films so far:
1. Jurassic World
2. Jurassic Park
3. Jurassic Park 3
4. Jurassic World 2: Fallen Kingdom
5. Jurassic Park 2: The Lost World
Judging from this trailer, I’m looking for Jurassic World 3: Dominion to rank at #3 because I am very invested in seeing dinosaurs chase people through a variety of ecological climes! A parasaurolophus in the snow? Sign me up!
I will say this movie looks like it needs about 60% more Laura Dern and 90% less Crisp Ratt, but maybe Dominion will pull a Scream and kill off a big Hollywood star so we can see that fool get eaten by a Tyrannosaur.
Anyway, obviously this is a big action movie that will live or die based on how well the CGI is choreographed, but the premise is interesting to a child whose first love was dinosaurs. They were a successful group of animals who, unlike humans, didn’t really have a big end looming on the horizon. Humans are going to cause our own extinction, but dinosaurs would still be here in some evolved form if not for a meteor. Actually, humans would’ve had no space to evolve if the dinosaurs hadn’t died because that big hole in the ecosystem created a vacuum that mammals eventually filled. Birds evolved from the dinosaurs that didn’t die after the meteor, but what kinds of big dinosaur descendants would we have?! What would be the dinosaur-descended equivalents to an elephant or whale or polar bear?
That’s not what this movie is, but my mind was just wandering. This movie is putting the apex predator of today against the apex predator of 65 million years ago, and they’re not supposed to be on the planet at the same time. We already know who is going to win (Laura Dern, duh) but I’m excited to see the fight.
